ARCHIVED - Where is the cheapest place to shop in Spain? The answer might surprise you
Three areas in the south of Spain have been identified as the cheapest towns to do the food shopping
Last month, the Spanish Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) revealed news of the cheapest supermarkets in Spain and told shoppers how they can save over 1,000 euros on their shopping every year just by choosing the right supermarket.
While the rising cost of energy has had a knock-on effect on the price of everything from toys at Christmas to food in the shops, there are still more affordable places to do the food shopping in Spain.
So where is the cheapest place in Spain to shop?
The town of Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz has been the cheapest town to shop in for years. The shops in Jerez are, on average, the ones that charge the least to fill up your shopping trolley.
By autonomous communities, the Valencian Community and Murcia are the cheapest regions to do the food shopping in Spain. In fact, the town of San Javier in Murcia will soon see the opening of new discount Russian supermarket Mere, billed as ‘the Russian Lidl’.
Where is the most expensive place to buy food in Spain?
At the other end of the scale, Getxo in the Basque Country and Las Palmas in the Canary Islands are the most expensive places in Spain, with an average of 11% more than Jerez.
Meanwhile, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, the Basque Country and Catalonia top the list as the regions where it is most expensive to shop.
