ARCHIVED - Young Brits are fleeing from the UK to Spain in their droves to escape King Charles III coronation
Demand for trips to Amsterdam, Benidorm, Barcelona and Prague has rocketed, with one travel firm revealing staff have specifically said they want to ‘escape the coronation’

Younger Brits are fleeing the United Kingdom in their droves this weekend “to escape the King’s coronation”.
Bookings for city break hotspots like Benidorm and Amsterdam are through the roof, with one tourism firm, Last Night of Freedom, reporting that jaunts to some short-haul locations have surged by as much as 400% year-on-year.
“Many customers have specifically said they wanted to travel this weekend in order to escape the King’s coronation, as they feared it would all be a bit too much at home,” said the firm’s Managing Director, Matt Mavir.
Millions are expected to throw street parties across the land on Saturday to watch King Charles officially take to the throne.
Hundreds of VIPs, Heads of State and members of the Royal Family will pack Westminster Abbey for the lavish ceremony – the first coronation in the country for 70 years.
However, according to Matt, many younger Brits are seemingly not bothered.
“The extra bank holiday, coupled with what some people think is OTT coronation coverage, has definitely steered people towards choosing this weekend for their stag or hen,” added the Tyneside-based businessman.
“One best man told our staff that the idea of being in Britain made him miserable.
“He said if he didn’t have a stag do to plan, he’d have just hopped on the first plane he could find and fly back Tuesday morning for work.”
YouGov data shows a definite divide towards the Royal Family in younger adults. While overall, 60 per cent of the public believe the monarchy to be good for Britain, that falls notably among adults aged under 49.
And polling released just this week shows that just 12% of adults aged between 18-24 think that Charles will make a good king – compared to a whopping 44% who think he won’t.
And seemingly, many of those won’t be in the UK to watch him officially start his reign – with bookings up across the continent.
Benidorm will host almost twice as many stag parties as anywhere else in Europe this weekend, according to industry data, while elsewhere in Spain, trips to Barcelona have rocketed by a staggering 400%.
And in Amsterdam, which recently launched a controversial campaign to encourage British revellers to ‘stay away’, groups seemingly haven’t got the message.
Bookings in the Dutch capital are up 300% compared to the same weekend last year, while in Prague, breaks are up 66% in the same period in 2022.
And perhaps the most telling stat involves London, where huge crowds are expected to gather for the ceremony.
Bookings to the capital are down by two-thirds this weekend, with Matt adding: “For many people, this is a momentous occasion.
“But I think for some younger people, they’d rather be anywhere else.”
