ARCHIVED - Overnight hotel stays in Spain doubled in August
The number of foreign guests staying in hotels in Spain has tripled
In a major boost to the tourism industry in Spain, arguably one of the sectors worst affected by the coronavirus pandemic, the Institute of National Statistics (INF) revealed on Thursday September 22 that overnight stays in hotels increased by 30% in the first eight months of the year compared with the same period in 2020.
In August alone, overnight visits exceeded 34.4 million, up 103.8% on the same month last year when the country was still in the grip of Covid. Bookings by domestic travellers still represent the majority of traffic, at 56.8%, but the number of international travellers actually tripled last month, up by 205.9%.
This is even before the Covid travel restrictions have been relaxed between England and Spain, as the new international travel rules won’t come into effect until October 4.
Comparing the figures of 2021 to pre-pandemic levels paints a different picture however, with overnight hotel stays still 26.7% lower than in 2019. Foreign holidaymakers have had the biggest impact, down 48.3% from two years ago, though foreign visitors to Spain this August have shot up compared to last year.
The average length of hotel stays also had a boost in August, standing at 3.3 nights per traveller, an increase of almost 16%.
During August, 14,813 hotel establishments were open in Spain, 13% more than in the same month of 2020, representing a 76.2% occupancy rate.
The Balearic Islands, Andalucía and Catalonia were the most popular destinations overall in August, with the vast majority of foreign tourists opting for the Balearics, followed by Catalonia and the Canary Islands.
Travellers from France and Germany accounted for 20.3% and 17.4% of hotel stays respectively, while overnight stays by tourists from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Italy accounted for 15.7%, 7.3% and 5.4% of the total.
Finally, the average daily cost of a room was 115 euros in August, which represents an increase of 18.5% compared to the same month in 2020.
