Alicante City Council to offer 339 activities for seniors this year
New programme expands workshops and registration opens September 10

This year’s expanded offer comes as part of a newly awarded two-year contract managed by Podium Gestión Integral SL, which won the tender with an investment of €308,000. The contract significantly boosts service hours by 38%, raising them from 4,900 to 7,950, and increases the number of workshops by 42%, from 66 to 114. These activities will be held across 19 senior centres, plus locations such as the Montemar Athletic Club, Postiguet Beach, and the Municipal Arts Centre.
The Councilor for Senior Citizens, Begoña León, underlined the importance of this initiative, saying, “The well-being of Alicante’s seniors is one of the priorities of this government team, and we are increasing services, resources, and campaigns to combat unwanted loneliness and promote active aging.”
León noted that senior volunteers play a key role in the diverse programme, teaching 166 of the workshops offered. The new range includes physical activities like Pilates, Zumba, tai chi, yoga, and Latin cardio, alongside cognitive courses such as creative writing, literary discussions, and mind training.
There are also cultural and artistic workshops covering music, dance styles (from flamenco and sevillanas to country and world dances), theatre, languages including English and French, plus crafts such as painting, sewing, jewellery making, and crochet. Wellness and mental health activities like laughter therapy, meditation, and osteoarthritis prevention are included, too. The programme is rounded out by outings, health talks, board games, dance nights, cultural weeks, and Christmas celebrations.
Registration opens on Wednesday September 10 and runs until Thursday September 18. Those wishing to sign up can do so online via the city council’s website or in person at their local senior centre, where staff will assist with the process. A lottery to allocate places will be held on Friday September 19, with vacancies published on Monday September 22.
All activities kick off on Wednesday October 1, providing an exciting season of engagement and enrichment for Alicante’s older residents.
