ARCHIVED - Alicante Food Bank launches Christmas collection campaign
Specsavers in Javea, Benidorm and Calpe will act as collection points for donations on the Costa Blanca throughout December
Alicante Food Bank has launched its Christmas collection campaign which will take place throughout December to help cover the "increased demand for food since the pandemic" and ensure that "no one in the province goes hungry this festive period".
Alicante Food Bank Foundation currently supports almost 45,000 people and distributes food through 186 charities to ensure that it reaches those who need it most.
Before the pandemic, they supported 35,000 people and, at the height of the Covid crisis, this figure reached 50,000. Fortunately, since then there has been a slight decrease in demand, "but it is not decreasing as fast as we would like, so it remains a challenge to ensure that all these people have the food they need", explained the foundation.
Specsavers Opticas in Javea, Calpe and Benidorm have once again chosen to work with the charity and act as collection points for donations, "relying on the goodwill of the public to increase the food stocks and ensure that the most vulnerable people have enough to eat this Christmas and beyond".
Anyone who wishes to make a donation in the food collection boxes can do so throughout December.
"Christmas is traditionally a time of solidarity, and we would love it if our customers and neighbours could buy a few extra items in their weekly shopping and drop them off at the opticians. If everyone does their bit, we can continue to help the 44,790 people who depend on the Alicante Food Bank," said Mike Stone, director of Specsavers Opticas in Javea and Calpe.
"Last year we were able to deliver more than 40 boxes of food donations to the them as part of the Christmas collection, of which over 15 were thanks to the generous residents of Javea. We would love to achieve the same, or even more this year, so we urge everyone to think a little bit about others and drop off your donations at one of the three branches," he added.
Donations should be in the form of non-perishable food, toiletries, household products, and essential everyday basic items. Products most in demand include cooking oil, milk, rice, soluble cocoa, canned fish and broths.
