ARCHIVED - Brit holiday boost: Canary Island Covid restrictions relaxed
More than 30% of Britons are planning a holiday to Spain this year
UK travellers booking a trip to Spain’s Canary Islands, which include Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, can enjoy a more relaxed break and far more freedom as the entire archipelago will operate at Covid alert level 1 from March 7.
The Canary Islands introduced its ‘traffic light system’ at the beginning of the pandemic, but thanks to favourable coronavirus data, the Governing Council agreed on Thursday March 3 to move down to the lowest risk level.
This means that bars, restaurants and other hospitality venues can open at 100% capacity both indoors and on outside terraces, while the closing times can now be as late as 4am. Large events, including guided tours, kiddie clubs and camps, can also operate at 100% capacity but while nightclubs have reopened, dancing is still not allowed.
In addition, a maximum of 12 people are allowed to socialise together in public.
The measures will be reviewed on April 30, but with all of Spain swiftly emerging from the sixth pandemic wave, the regional authorities have indicated that they hope to abolish the remaining Covid restrictions in time for the summer, with President Sanchez already hinting that the days of wearing masks indoors are limited.
The general director of Public Health José Juan Alemán has revealed that the current traffic light system will "disappear before long" and that it is "perfectly feasible" that the islands will be in a position to host large events without masks by June.

March has already seen travel become increasingly less complicated for UK tourists, with unvaccinated Brits who have recovered from Covid now allowed to enter Spain and unjabbed teens under 18 also permitted to travel.
According to easyJet, more than 30% of Britons are planning a holiday to Spain this year.
