ARCHIVED - La Palma volcano eruption ends after 85 days
The Canary Island of La Palma has been feeling the effects of the volcano for almost three months
The minister of Public Administrations, Justice and Security in the Canary Islands, Julio Pérez, has officially announced that the La Palma eruption has ended after 85 days and eight hours.
Scientists have confirmed that the Cumbre Vieja volcano finished erupting on December 13, but more tests and observation were needed to officially declare the eruption over. The volcanic activity first began on September 19 and since then has displaced thousands of people and destroyed countless homes over the past few months.
Since December 13, experts have not detected any lava, pyroplasts, tremors or deformations on the La Palma island.
However, Mr. Pérez, who is also the director of Pevolca, warned the public that, although the eruption has ended, the danger is not over, and precaution must still be exercised. A representative from the scientific committee Pevolca has warned that other “dangers” and the “magmatic reactivation” of the Cumbre Vieja volcano cannot be ruled out.
Seismic activity on the island is likely to be one of the remnants of the volcanic eruption for the weeks and months to come.
During the first two weeks of January, the relocation of residents who lost their homes and the re-establishment of essential services on the island will begin.
