ARCHIVED - Spain increases the capacity of football stadiums and basketball arenas
The positive evolution of the coronavirus pandemic in Spain has given authorities confidence to relax the measures
After Spain achieved 70 per cent vaccination coverage on Wednesday and with the continuing downward trend in the cumulative incidence rate, the autonomous communities and Ministry of Health have agreed to increase the maximum capacities at sporting events as a sign that things are slowly but surely returning to normal.
From September 1, basketball arenas and football stadiums can have a maximum capacity of 60 per cent outdoors and 40 per cent indoors, but communities that wish to keep the numbers lower are free to do so. This comes after Catalonia voted against increasing capacities at sporting events. What is not up for debate is the use of facemasks at these matches, which will still be mandatory.
The original document on security measures and capacity at large sporting events, published on August 4, set the capacity at 40 per cent outdoors and 30 per cent indoors. The new measures will remain in place for the month of September.
