ARCHIVED - Benidorm police seize 200,000 euros worth of conterfeit sports and luxury brands from shops in the resort
Almost 2,000 items of fake clothing and accessories were confiscated from four different outlets in the Costa Blanca coastal town
The Guardia Civil has seized 1,913 counterfeit sports and luxury brand clothing and accessories during a swoop on four stores in Benidorm, with a combined value of more than 200,000 euros.
Four people are under investigation for an offence against industrial property.
A probe was launched last September when the Guardia Civil's Tax and Border Patrol in Calpe detected businesses involved in the sale of counterfeit products.
Officers became aware of four particular establishments in Benidorm where counterfeit clothing and accessories were allegedly being sold. After obtaining sufficient evidence, they contacted representatives of the affected labels.
The brands' experts were able to certify that the products sold by the businesses under investigation were not original products, and were indeed copies.
On December 29, 2022, after studying and analysing all the documentation, police and a representative of one of the complainant brands carried out four inspections of the points of sale "simultaneously and in a coordinated manner".
After proving that the clothes and accessories were counterfeit, officers seized a total of 1,913 garments and accessories that were found to be "low quality products", both in terms of the materials used in their manufacture and their design.
In addition, at one of the inspected outlets, they discovered a double-bottom behind the sales counter where stashed goods were found packaged and sorted by makes and models.
None of the shop owners could prove the origin of the counterfeit products, or provide any kind of authorisation from the brands concerned to sell them.
The four store managers, three men and a woman aged between 46 and 55, face charges for a crime against industrial property. The proceedings and the seized articles have been placed at the disposal of Benidorm Magistrate's Court number 2.
