ARCHIVED - Cheap as chips: which supermarket in Spain gives the most bang for your buck?
An average supermarket haul in Spain is now 15% more expensive than it was last year
Finding value for money in our everyday lives has never been more important, especially considering the fact that the cost of your average trolley-full of groceries has risen by 15.2% in Spain. Essentially, 95% of all the products found on supermarket shelves have seen a price hike this year, the biggest jump in more than three decades.
For those of us without the time or inclination to shop around for bargains, the helpful folk at the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) have done the hard work for us by finding the cheapest supermarkets in Spain.
The analysts visited various stores and online retailers (1,180 in all) in 65 cities across the country and compared shopping bills from May of 2021 to the same month this year. What they found was that the ever-popular Mercadona was one of the cheapest in 34 of the regions for common products like fresh fruit, veg, meat and fish, personal care items and pantry staples.
Of the 65 cities in the study, the Valencian supermarket came out on top in 10 areas: Alcobendas, Barakaldo, Bilbao, Huelva, Lleida, Lugo, Marbella, Ourense, Pamplona and Vitoria.
It was the second cheapest in nine other cities and ranked at number three in 15 others.
It will probably come as no surprise, but when the OCU looked at the cost of shopping in communities in general, the tourist hotspots of the Canary and Balearic Islands were by far the most expensive. On the flip side, La Rioja, Extremadura, Galicia and Murcia will offer you the best value for money.
And even though it’s not the cheapest in the bunch, Mercadona has recently been voted the most popular supermarket in the Region of Murcia.
