ARCHIVED - Coronavirus hospitalisations on the rise: Spain Covid update May 11
Experts fear that Spain could well be at the gates of a seventh coronavirus wave
At a time when health experts have been warning that a seventh coronavirus wave is almost certainly on the horizon, the incidence rate continues to rise in older age groups and arguably the strongest indicator of how the pandemic is evolving, hospital admissions, is also on the rise.
The Spanish government announced earlier this week that it plans to completely overhaul its track and trace system after public health monitoring was shown to be highly ineffective over the last two years. Spain’s Covid tracking app Radar will also be decommissioned this November; the multi-million euro application proved to be nothing short of a total flop, with just 21% of the population downloading it.
Coronavirus infections
According to data from the Ministry of Health, the communities have reported 49,829 new infections throughout Spain on Tuesday May 10, of which 25,573 correspond to the group that is above 59 years of age. It should be noted that, with the new coronavirus monitoring strategy, not all regional health services test the general population.
Between April 30 and May 6, the autonomous communities have carried out 191,108 diagnostic tests on older people, which has brought the positivity rate up to 31.33%.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate has shot up by 30 points since Friday, now standing at 843 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Andalucía is now the community with the lowest figure, at 447 cases, followed by Madrid (571) and Catalonia (576).
The Region of Murcia has the highest incidence in all of Spain (1,686 on Tuesday), closely followed by the North African enclave of Ceuta (1,667) and La Rioja (1,580).
Hospitalisations
Most worryingly, the number of admissions has risen exponentially in recent days, jumping by 433 people since Friday, although the number of patients being treated in Spain’s ICUs has decreased slightly, to 356.
Fatalities
The mortality rate in over 60s has remained stable, repeating the 4.4% recorded in the last report from the Ministry of Health. In the last four days, 254 people have lost their lives, raising the overall death toll since the beginning of the pandemic to 221.54 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.
Vaccination data
As of April 22, a total of 39,053,044 people, representing 92.6% of the population over the age of 12 are now double jabbed. In addition, 39,218,544 people, or 93%, have had at least one vaccine.
