ARCHIVED - Europe-wide electronic toll system to be implemented in Spain
This will allow drivers to pay tolls throughout the EU with a single device
Later this year the government in Spain will approve a decree to implement an electronic toll device for vehicles travelling across Europe that is compatible with the systems used throughout the European Union.
The Ministry of Transport has indicated that the reasons for the new system are two-fold: firstly, drivers will be able to travel across the continent with a single electronic device, and secondly, the electronic toll will facilitate the exchange of information on unpaid tolls in different Member States.
The date of implementation has yet to be specified, but the royal decree states that the intention is to "guarantee the interoperability of electronic toll systems installed on roads and Spanish motorways with those of other Member States of the European Union".
To this end, the European electronic toll service (EETS) will be a complementary system to the national electronic toll services.
The Ministry attempted to adopt a similar measure back in 2004 without success as each European country implemented its own system, and most weren’t compatible with each other, a pitfall they are hoping to avoid with EETS.
