Festivals, concerts and sporting events in Spain must offer free water from 2023
Supermarkets in Spain will also have to sell reusable containers and inform customers of the environmental impact of plastic

Spain has come late to the game of the European Commission’s Single-use Plastics Directives, which was originally signed in early July last year, but the government is quickly making up lost ground and has announced that by next year, all large sporting events, concerts and festivals will have to provide free drinking water and means for revellers to fill their own reusable containers.
Last month, the Spanish authorities announced that bars, restaurants and other hospitality establishments would be obliged to offer customers tap water free of charge in a bid to cut down on single use plastics.
Once formally approved, the Spanish decree will mean that single-use glasses, cups, cutlery and other such plastic items will be banned, the recycling system will be overhauled and supermarkets measuring 300 square metres or more will be obliged to offer bulk food and drink products, as well as reusable containers, from January 1.

The changes do not stop there: from 2026, retailers with premises larger than 120 square metres will be obliged to carry at least one beverage product in reusable containers, and at least three drinks if they measure between 120 and 300 square metres.
Looking ahead, larger stores (between 300 and 1,000 metres) must offer at least four beverage options in reusable bottles.
Also from January next year, depending on their size, each store will have to provide a certain amount of fresh produce that doesn’t contain any packaging, while also informing their customers clearly about the environmental impact and waste management implications of product packaging.
