ARCHIVED - French criminal wanted for 80m-euro alcohol tax fraud arrested in Estepona
The fugitive, who was cuaght in Andalusia, had been wanted in France since 2019 for his part in a huge money laundering and tax evasion scheme
Police in Spain have arrested a 60-year-old man in Estepona, Malaga who was the subject of a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) issued by the French authorities. The suspect was wanted for allegedly participating in a criminal organisation that had defrauded some 80 million euros in alcohol tax in France.
The investigation into the whereabouts of this citizen, carried out by agents attached to the Local Alien and Border Squad of the Estepona Police Station, with the help of the Drugs and Organised Crime Unit Udyco-Estepona, as well as the French and UK authorities, finally located the suspect, who had taken up residence in Marbella.
After some field work following his trail, investigators finally located him on November 7 in Carril de la Resinera, in Estepona. According to the investigations, the suspect changed his address frequently and tried to go unnoticed among the large British population in the area. At the time of his arrest, he was living illegally and undocumented in the country.
Alcohol taxes
According to the warrant, the arrested man played a leading role in a fraudulent scheme in France. In 2019, he was charged with participating in an alcohol excise tax fraud perpetrated between 2014 and 2018, with a particular incidence in the Pas de Calais department. The criminal organisation used illicit manoeuvres and forged documents in order to avoid paying tax, to the tune of an estimated 80 million euros.
He is in Spanish court now on charges of fraud, money laundering, false documentation and tax evasion, among others.
