ARCHIVED - Highest number of new cases in three months: Valencia Covid update November 22
1,762 new infections across the region, including Alicante province, more than 50% higher than last Monday
New Covid infections have once again peaked over the weekend, with the Ministry of Health confirming an additional 1,762 positives, 51.37% more than last Monday's 1,164 cases and the highest figure recorded since August 30.
The pressure is being felt in hospitals with an extra 40 Covid patients being treated on wards and an extra six seriously ill people in ICU.
The spike has also seen the 14-day cumulative incidence rate soar to 108.32 per 100,000 inhabitants six weeks after the majority of anti-Covid restrictions were lifted.
Valencia President, Ximo Puig has recently ruled out introducing new restrictions, but In a bid to curb the continued spread of the virus, he today announced the Covid passport is likely to be introduced in the leisure and hospitality sector before December 6.
He also reminded that masks must be worn in indoor spaces and outdoors where social distancing cannot be maintained.
New cases
A further 1,762 new cases have been reported over the weekend, up from 727 on Friday November 19, bringing the total number of positives since the beginning of the pandemic to 524,571 people. By province: 273 in Castellón (56,433 in total); 535 in Alicante (191,905) and 954 in Valencia (276,232).
Recoveries
802 people have recovered from Covid since the last update, meaning that to date, 521,490 people in the Valencian region have overcome the virus. By province: 55,819 in Castellón; 190,633 in Alicante; and 274,982 in Valencia. The total number of unassigned discharges remains at 56.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 289 people admitted to hospitals in the three provinces, 40 more than last Friday, 55 of whom are being treated in ICUs (six more): 63 in the province of Castellón, 10 in ICU; 96 in the province of Alicante, 24 in the ICU; and 130 in the province of Valencia, 21 of them in the ICU.
Fatalities
There have been two reported deaths which occurred in the last seven days, aged 75 and 81. This means the total number of fatalities since the start of the pandemic stands at 7,891: 870 of these deaths have been recorded in Castellón; 3,030 in Alicante; and 3,991 in the province of Valencia.
Vaccinations
A total of 4,218,723 people have received one dose of vaccine, and 4,150,078 people are now fully immunised with two doses of Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca, or the single-dose Janssen.
Active cases
According to the latest data, there are currently 6,632 active cases, which represents 1.24% of the total positives.
Outbreaks
Since the last update there have been two reported outbreaks with 10 or more associated cases: in Valencia, with 14 cases of educational origin; and in Benicarló, with 13 cases of social origin.
