ARCHIVED - Hunter shot to death in Navarra
Officers in Navarra are trying to establish whether the man was killed by his own gun or that of another hunter
A Navarra hunter died from a gunshot wound on Saturday October 16 while hunting wild boar in a preserve in Sos del Rey Catolico in the Torre Anues area, on the border with Aragon. The 42-year-old man has been named locally as Jorge Larrañeta Barberena and is understood to have been the father of two young children, aged eight and six.
While it has not yet been definitively established if the fatal shot came from the man’s own gun or that of another hunter, preliminary investigations have indicated that the accident was most likely caused by a rebounding bullet.
The 112 SOS Aragon helicopter travelled to the scene of the accident at 11:15am but the man was sadly pronounced dead a short time later. The weapon used by the hunter has been seized by a Seprona patrol and officers have already interviewed several witnesses in an attempt to establish what happened.
In January of this year, a 57-year-old man from Tarazona was admitted to the Miguel Servet hospital in Zaragoza after being shot in a hunting area. The Guardia Civil of Zaragoza commented at that time that "it was a random shot” which hit the man in the calf of his left leg, resulting in a very serious wound.
