ARCHIVED - Incidence rate drops below 5,000 for first time in weeks: Murcia Covid update January 26
Active cases are also on the decrease in the Region of Murcia
The Region of Murcia appears to be following the national downward trend, as almost all Covid indicators are stabilising and beginning to drop. The only exception is the death rate, which remains consistently high across Spain, especially in the region of Andalucía, where the Covid deaths have increased by 60% in just one day.
Representatives from the hospitality sector in Murcia have complained about the harsh restrictions in the Region, comparing them to the rules in other autonomous communities, where governments have begun to relax their measures. However, the regional government is unlikely to get rid of all restrictions just yet, as Murcia currently has one of the highest incidence rates in the country.
New Cases
The latest update reports 4,952 cases in the past 24 hours, 241 fewer than on Monday January 24 and over 1,000 fewer than this time last week.
Active cases
The number of active cases has been decreasing slowly but steadily in the Region since January 17 and there are now 36,031 people in Murcia who currently have the virus.
Fatalities
Covid deaths have remained at around six per day throughout January, and the latest update is no different, with five further fatalities in the past 24 hours. The death toll in Murcia now stands at 1,951 since the beginning of the pandemic.
Hospitalisations
Covid patients in the Region’s hospitals have increased in the past day, with 635 people now hospitalised with the virus. However, the number of ICU patients has dropped from 85 to 83 since yesterday. There are a further 35,396 Covid-positive patients who have not required hospitalisation and who are self-isolating at home.
Recoveries
5,569 people have been given the all-clear from coronavirus since the previous update on January 25.
Incidence rates
For the first time since January 12, the 14-day incidence rate in the Region has dropped below 5,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. According to Murcia Salud, the most recent 14-day figure is 4,894.7 cases, while the 7-day rate is 2,096.5 cases per 100,000 residents – down from 2,174.9 on January 24.
Vaccines
In the past day, 17,680 vaccines have been administered in Murcia, bringing the percentage of the population who have had at least one dose to 99.29%, while 86.77% have been double-jabbed. In total, 2,943,159 doses have been given out in the Region of Murcia.
