Jail for British tourist who raped the female friend of his son in Magaluf hotel
The 45-year-old dad was arrested trying to flee Spain just hours after the attack took place
British tourist David McPaul Wigging, 43, has been sentenced to four years in prison for raping his son’s female friend in a Magaluf hotel room last summer.
Spanish prosecutors had initially sought a nine-year sentence, but Wigging agreed to a plea deal before the trial, which took place at the Audiencia Court in Palma on Monday morning, February 5.
According to court documents, Wigging was heavily intoxicated during the assault, which occurred on May 9, 2023. This was considered a mitigating factor in determining his sentence. Once he has served half of his term, Wigging will be extradited from Spain.
The victim, a woman in her 20s, is also believed to be British.
Prosecutors said in the two-page indictment: “In the early hours of May 9, 2023 the accused, with the intention of satisfying his sexual desire, and taking advantage of the fact his victim had consumed a large amount of alcohol and was in a deep sleep on a sofa bed, got alongside her and penetrated her without her realising. As she woke up and began shouting at him to stop, he grabbed her by the arm and accelerated his rhythm of penetration until he ejaculated inside her.
“The woman subsequently went to a medical centre and was very emotionally affected and in a depressed state. Medical experts who examined her recorded she had three small bruises compatible with being grabbed as well as marks on her breast.”
The victim managed to escape the hotel and alerted the Guardia Civil. Officers took her statement before heading to the hotel, where they found that Wigging had already checked out.
The suspect was apprehended at the boarding gate at Palma Airport just hours after the attack while attempting to flee the country. As part of the plea bargain agreement, he must pay his victim more than 7,400 euros in compensation.
