ARCHIVED - Orihuela restores pre-pandemic bar and restaurant terrace regulations
Hospitality estabishments in the Vega Baja town, Alicante province, will no longer be able to place tables and chairs on public highways

Municipalities across Alicante province attempted to alleviate the crippling effects of the pandemic on the hospitality sector, one of which was the hugely restrictive capacity limitations, by allowing bars, restaurants and hotels to place tables and chairs on public highways.
But with the lifting of anti-Covid measures and a "return to normality", this amendment of the ordinance has come to an end in Orihuela where the Town Hall and the Local Police have been working for several weeks "to steadily correct this extension of terraces and gradually return to a normal situation", according to the local council.
"For a long time we have worked side by side with the hotel and catering trade in Orihuela and the Costa, precisely to help them when it was most needed in the midst of the pandemic, a commitment which was good both economically and in terms of health," explained deputy Mayor and Councillor for Town Planning, José Aix who added that "when the hotel and catering industry works well, commerce also works well".
But the Town Hall has stressed that "it is no longer necessary for bars and restaurants to continue to occupy the public highway with their terraces", so vertical signage has been installed and previous terrace spaces restored.
"By doing this we also address the needs of residents who require more public spaces to park, whilst respecting their need for peace and quiet," said Aix.
However, Orihuela Town Hall is proposing to extend the suspension of terrace tax until 2024.
