ARCHIVED - Police rescue two boys dragged out to sea on a surfboard off Denia coast
The young teens were more than 500 metres off the Marina Alta coastline in Alicante province
Two boys dragged out to sea on a surfboard with one paddle were rescued more than half a kilometre from Denia coastline by police.
The desperate pair were frantically trying to paddle back to the shore but wind and the tide continued to pull them further out.
They were spotted in serious trouble just after 5.30pm on Wednesday August 10 by officers from Denia Police Maritime Surveillance Service carrying out surveillance work in marked bathing areas, specifically on Punta Molins and l'Almadrava beaches.
From the coast they could see the surfboard adrift with two people on it, and when they got closer, they realised the young teens were in danger and scared.
Maritime officers hauled them onto the surveillance boat and took them back to Punta Molins beach where they were reunited with their parents.
Those in charge of the Vigilancia Marítima service are warning users of 'floating devices' (boards, kayaks and inflatables) to be aware of the wind, swell and tide conditions before setting out to sea.
In addition, you should always tell a family member or friend that you are going out to sea and what time you will be returning, that way, someone on land can alert the emergency services.
"It is also advisable to go out to sea with a system that allows you to warn if you have an emergency, a mobile phone with a watertight case, for example," added the Maritime Service.
