ARCHIVED - San Fulgencio greenlights Flood Risk Action Plan
The plan establishes protocols and specific responsibilities in the event of extreme weather conditions in the Vega Baja municipality
San Fulgencio Town Council has approved the Municipal Flood Risk Action Plan (PMARS) which sets out protocols and tasks to be carried out by different authorities and agencies in case of emergency.
"In this way, we can offer a faster and more efficient response in situations of flooding, such as those we unfortunately suffered in September 2019 due to the DANA storm," explained the town mayor and head of public safety, José Sampere.
These flood protection measures are especially important in the face of wet weather that is being predicted across Alicante province.
The document, together with the Municipal Action Plan for Seismic Risk (PAMRS), and Territorial Emergency Plan (PTEM), includes the geographical and general characteristics of San Fulgencio, with the aim of detecting weak points and vulnerabilities, as well as the means and resources available for dealing with emergencies.
It also establishes a command and organisation body, called CECOPAL (Centro de Coordinación Operativa Municipal), which will be responsible for specifying the tasks to be carried out during floods etc.
CECOPAL, headed by the mayor, will be located at the Local Police Headquarters, made up of an advisory committee, an information office and a communications centre.
"Due to its geographical characteristics and extensive network of irrigation channels and ditches, San Fulgencio is prone to adverse phenomena, and this document, together with the Vega Regeneration Plan, will help to protect people both locally and regionally from having to suffer floods of the magnitude of 2019 again," added Sampere.
The 100-page regional Vega Regeneration Plan aims to "turn a disaster into an opportunity to promote a resilient environment that favours the economic and social regeneration of the Vega Baja", whilst preparing the region for future storms and destructive weather conditions.
