ARCHIVED - Search continues for woman who fell overboard from cruise ship in Mallorca
The luxury liner had just set off on an adult-only cruise around Spain
A huge search and rescue operation is currently underway in Spain for a “middle-aged” woman who fell overboard from a cruise ship off the coast of Mallorca in the early hours of Sunday morning, June 5, not long after the vessel had departed from Barcelona.
The alarm was raised at around 2am for the woman, who has not yet been identified, and two Spanish Coastguard helicopters along with a boat were immediately mobilised to search for the victim. The cruise ship is also understood to have temporarily halted, but was reported to have reached the port city of Cartagena by Sunday evening on its way to Malaga, where it is set to dock early on Monday morning, June 6.

“Today at 2am the cruise liner Azamara Quest has informed our centre in Palma about a person who had fallen into the water 75 miles off Majorca,’ a spokesperson for the Spanish Coastguard said.
“All night our helicopters Helimer 206 and 223 have been searching for her in an operation which has also involved the cruise ship and our vessel Concepcion Arenal.”
No further details have been released about the incident, but it is understood that the ship had just embarked on the first day of an eight-day adults-only cruise around Spain with a scheduled stop in Casablanca, Morocco; the cruise liner has just returned to the open waters after operations were halted for two years during the coronavirus pandemic.
Royal Caribbean originally owned the entire Azamara fleet but sold it to private equity firm Sycamore Partners at the height of the health crisis.
