ARCHIVED - Spain increases outdoor capacity of football stadiums to 100 per cent
Football and basketball stadiums in Spain have increased capacities both indoors and outdoors, but masks are still mandatory
As Spain races toward the end of the fifth wave of the coronavirus pandemic into a state of ‘new normal’ many autonomous communities, such as Valencia and Andalucía, have eased their restrictions in recent days, and the Ministry of Health itself has followed suit by announcing that outdoor sports stadiums and basketball courts can return to 100% capacity.
Following a meeting of the Interterritorial Health Council on Wednesday September 29 it was decided that, for the month of October, enclosed sporting spaces, such as those of the ACB Basketball League, will be allowed a maximum capacity of 80%. The use of a mask will also be mandatory.
This is the third time these Covid safety measures have been reviewed, and the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, pointed out that the changes to outdoor regulations represent a 60% increase in capacity compared to September. In fact, when the stadiums initially reopened in August, entry was limited to just 20%. However, she has cautioned that the new measures, in place between October 1 and 31, will depend on the evolution of the pandemic, and the figures will be reviewed toward the end of next month.
There is a slight catch to the easing of the restrictions, however, as although capacity has been increased, patrons will still have to ensure an interpersonal safety distance of 1.5 metres, and so the maximum numbers allowed will be very difficult to reach.
In relation to training sessions for local soccer and basketball clubs, the Ministry would still prefer if they were held without members of the public watching, but if this isn’t possible then the maximum capacity rules must be followed.
For now, the sale and consumption of food and beverages during games is still prohibited.
