ARCHIVED - Spain to consider legalising the use of marihuana for medicinal purposes
A subcommittee will be in charge of analysing the benefits and scientific evidence surrounding the use of cannabis
After a recent Plenary session, the Spanish government is considering joining other European and International countries in allowing the use of medicinal cannabis in the treatment of certain diseases.
The Plenary Assembly of Congress has approved the creation of a subcommittee to analyse the medical use of cannabis and prepare a report detailing the scientific evidence in favour or against this plant, including its weaknesses and benefits.
This proposal was formulated by the political party PNV (Partido Nacionalista Vasco), based in the Basque Country, and was supported by the majority of those in attendance, with 206 votes in favour and 141 against.
The PNV have asked for an official report to be made in order to evaluate the current regulation of cannabis in Spain, while considering the experiences of other countries which have approved the use of cannabis for medical purposes.
France, Portugal, Germany, Sweden and Italy are just some of the European countries that have started to regulate the medicinal use of cannabis and, outside of Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia also allow the use of cannabis for the treatment of some illnesses.
According to the PNV, the use of cannabis for therapeutic purposes should established based on the scientific evidence surrounding its quality and safety, which is provided though controlled trials.
They have requested a serious debate about the current situation and knowledge of medical marihuana and the different possibilities that exist regarding the regulation and access of medicinal cannabis in Spain.
