Spanish supermarkets withdraw popular food product due to presence of metal fragments
Health authorities in Spain have warned customers not to consume the contaminated tofu
The Spanish Agency for Food and Nutrition (AESAN) has issued an urgent recall of a well-known brand of tofu sold in supermarkets across the country. The organisation has confirmed that potentially dangerous fragments of metals have been detected in the product and have urged the public not to consume it.
The contaminated product is Tofu Spinacia made by the Taifun brand and is sold in plastic packaging.
Affected batches include:
254, with an expiration date of 06/02/2023.
274, with an expiration date of 06/22/2023.

According to Aesan, the alert was raised by the German health authorities through the Coordinated System for Rapid Information Exchange (SCIRI) and the defect was detected through random product testing.
This brand of tofu is most widely sold in supermarkets in Andalucía, Aragon, Asturias, the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Catalonia, Castilla y Leon, the Valencian Community, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid and the Basque Country, but it could easily have been distributed elsewhere in Spain.
Customers who have already purchased the affected batches have been advised not to consume the tofu and to return it to the point of sale for a full refund. The product has been removed from supermarket shelves.
