Suspicious packages force evacuation of Spanish Defence Ministry
Several high-profile offices in Spain were previously targeted with letter bombs

Official buildings across Spain are still on high alert after letter bombs were mailed to several high-profile locations at the end of last year, so the authorities wasted no time in evacuating certain areas of the Ministry of Defence when two suspicious packages were delivered on Wednesday February 1.
According to sources from the Ministry of the Interior, staff were moved out of the headquarters shortly after noon and the area was secured, but after an extensive examination, Tédax explosives specialists determined that the packages did not contain bombs.
The established protocol was nevertheless followed to a tee since the authorities are still watchful for any further attacks. Last December, six envelopes containing pyrotechnic material were sent to the Ministry of Defence, the offices of President Sanchez at the Palacio de la Moncloa, the Embassy of Ukraine and the United States, the European Union Satellite Center, located at the Torrejón air base de Ardoz, and an arms manufacturing company in Zaragoza.
Although these letter bombs contained small explosives, only one embassy worker sustained minor burns to his hand.
Last week, a former employee of the Vitoria City Council was remanded in custody as the alleged perpetrator of the six attacks.
