ARCHIVED - Tarragona gunman denied release 24 hours before he is euthanised
The shooter has requested to be moved to a private hospital in Barcelona before his death

A judge has rejected the request of Tarragona gunman, Eugen Sabau, to be released to a civilian hospital hours before he is euthanised on Tuesday August 23, claiming that the prisoner poses a flight risk, particularly since he has shown no remorse for his crimes.
On December 14 of last year, Mr Sabau shot three former co-workers at a security firm near Barcelona before injuring an officer who attempted to stop him at a check point. The gunman then barricaded himself in an abandoned farmhouse and a shoot-out ensued, resulting in Mr Sabau being paralysed.
Before he could face trial for murder, the shooter applied for voluntary euthanasia, a request that was granted in July.
On the eve of his death, however, lawyers for the gunman requested that he be transferred out of Terrassa Penitentiary Hospital to an ordinary health centre, so he could say goodbye to his loved ones without police surveillance.
While his current condition would make an escape attempt appear unlikely, the judge nevertheless felt that the risk was too high, since “any third party, relative or friend, could easily access” a private hospital and facilitate his flight.
"It cannot be ignored that the foreseeable future that awaits him is at least bleak, since he is undergoing a euthanasia process for which a date has already been set,” the judge explained, adding that, if he decides against dying, he still faces many years behind bars.
Furthermore, the magistrate pointed out that Mr Sabau has shown “a scant willingness on his part to assume responsibility for his actions, at least in the judicial process in which he is immersed".
