ARCHIVED - Taxi drivers in Spain to stage mass protest against fuel prices
The sector is demanding similar solutions to those offered to the striking transport workers in Spain
As the transport sector across Spain continues its indefinite hiatus against skyrocketing petrol and diesel prices and untenable working conditions, taxi drivers are about to get in on the action and have organised their own demonstration in Madrid on Sunday March 27. They will be joined by rental car owners, ambulance and bus drivers.
In an attempt to quell the rising tensions, the National Committee for Road Transport (CNTC) plans to meet with Spain’s Minister of Transport, Raquel Sanchez on Wednesday, and will demand measures to solve "the critical situation that the sector is going through due to the exponential rise in energy prices."
The CNTC has already met with the minister to agree on a 500 million euro relief package for the striking transport sector, a measure that was roundly rejected by its organisers as “an offence to carriers.”
However, the National Taxi Association (Antaxi) welcomes the deliberations as an opportunity to prevent more extreme action. Its president, Julio Sanz, hopes to highlight that "the exponential increase in energy in recent months is having a very worrying effect on road passenger transport, which, if it continues along the same lines, will have serious problems maintaining itself."
“We know that the situation is generally complicated, but we trust that the Executive will use the resources at its disposal to guarantee the survival of this type of transport that provides service to all of Spain,” Mr Sanz added.
Meanwhile, the national truckers strike has dragged on into its ninth day without any sign of let-up, causing widespread supply disruptions across practically every sector. Ms Sanchez has urged drivers to return to work, insisting that the government is “sensitive” to their plight and that the proposed measures “will be effective.”
“We are very aware of the claims of the sector and, specifically, of the self-employed,” the minister said. “The measures that are going to be applied are very with them in mind and, therefore, I ask them for a vote of confidence.”
