ARCHIVED - Ten students in Elche test positive for Covid after Mallorca trip
It's feared there may be more cases among the second-year pupils from Elche in the Baix Vinalopo comarca, Alicante.
At least 10 second-year students have tested positive after an end of term trip to Mallorca earlier this month.
The positives were confirmed on Monday, June 21, and there are fears there may be more cases with tests currently being carried out on the remainder of the 26 pupils who visited the largest of the Balearic Islands.
The trip was organised by educational agencies after the students had completed the first of their Baccalaureate Assessment tests for University Access (EBAU), with at least 10 students now having to take the remainder of their exams electronically.
The connection was made after six positives were confirmed at Altabix health centre in Elche, all of whom had been on the vacation.
According to reports, the students claim "recommended security measures" to combat the spread of Covid were not followed at "various parties", where "there were people not wearing masks".
However, the Valencia region's Ministry of Health has "not declared the positives an outbreak" because "the origin was not in Elche, it was in Mallorca".
Elsewhere in Alicante province, a Covid outbreak which originated at a nightclub in Torrevieja, in the Vega Baja, has more than doubled in the last two weeks with 60 cases confirmed between June 14 and 20.
