ARCHIVED - The General Hospital in Elche is now home to a pioneering technique to detect prostate cancer
The prostate fusion biopsy technique is only currently available in this one hospital in the region of Valencia and 5 in total across Spain
The Urology services in the General Hospital of Elche are now a reference point for the whole of the Comunidad Valenciana in the diagnosis of prostate cancer, as the hospital now has the ability to carry out a highly effective prostate fusion biopsy technique, a method used by specialists to diagnose prostate cancer.
Around 100 patients have already experienced this technique thanks to a newly acquired piece of machinery, the Bk3000 with integrated bkFusion services, which allows the real-time fusion of previous magnetic resonance images (MRI) with an ultrasound.
The new equipment is an ultrasound system with advanced technology, which provides urologists with more precise information about areas where prostate cancer is usually found and reduces the amount of time needed for the procedure.
This state-of-the-art technology is fairly new and there are currently only 5 of these systems in Spanish hospitals: this new machine one in Elche is the first in the region of Valencia.
The acquisition of this new piece of equipment coincides with a 350,000-euro investment into the Lithotripsy and Pelvic Floor Unit in the General Hospital of Elche.
In the Lithiasis and Endourology department, the number of consultations has been increased and there is now an ISO 7 validated operating room for minor surgeries, endourology, prostate biopsies and pelvic floor interventions, as well as a pre-surgical circuit and a post-anaesthesia care unit (PACU), all of which is contributing to an increased quality of care in the Valencia region.
