ARCHIVED - The price of flights from Spain soars by 45 per cent
Airline tickets in Spain are expected to drop in price by the autumn
Since inflation is Spain has broken another record and exceed 10%, bumped up largely by increasing fuel and electricity costs, it’s perhaps unsurprising that flight costs have followed suit, particularly at the height of the summer.
According to Kiwi.com, airfare from Spain is 45% more expensive this July than the same month last year, mainly due to the high cost of jet fuel and an ever-increasing demand for travel since Covid restrictions were axed.
It doesn’t end there though, as the experts foresee the price of flights rising by an additional 13% in August, the traditional month for Spaniards to take their summer holidays, while travellers will finally get a break in September and October, when airfare should drop by 27.5%.

Despite the higher cost of air flights, people are still choosing to escape the stifling heat in Spain in their droves, and travel reservations so far this July have practically tripled compared to the same period in 2021.
London and Rome are some of the top destinations in Europe at the moment while people preferring to holiday in Spain are most likely to opt for Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona and Madrid.
This month, Madrid-Rome, Barcelona-Mallorca and Malaga-London have been some of the busiest routes.
It seems that not even increased travel costs can stop people from embarking on polluting flights, and travellers are unwilling to cut down on their foreign holidays for the sake of the environment, even though the wildfires caused by the climate crisis and the increased cost of flying provide the perfect excuse to take a staycation instead.
If not even a substantial hit to their own bank balance will make people think twice about flying, what will it take to make people finally wake up to their own responsibility when it comes to halting pollution?
Regarding flight cancellations, between June and July, Kiwi.com has registered a cancellation rate by airlines of 2.79%, higher than the 1.08% of April and May. This is primarily due to the ongoing strikes by cabin crew of both Ryanair and easyJet. For now, cancellations predicted for the autumn, in October and November, are notably lower, at 0.83%.
