ARCHIVED - Three inmates escape from Melilla prison on jet skis
The inmates fled to Morocco while on a three-day leave from the Melilla penitentiary
According to a statement released by the ACAIP-UGT prison union, three inmates of Moroccan nationality who were serving sentences in the prison of Melilla managed to escape on jet skis while on a three-day leave.
The union has criticised authorities for allowing this “remarkable” flight by granting certain prisoners who have an expulsion order attached to their sentences permission to spend several days away from the penitentiary, something they feel poses far too great a temptation for inmates to flee.
Melilla, a Spanish coastal enclave bordering Morocco, is frequently the site of illegal frontier crossings. Sources from the Penitentiary Institutions reported that the three men fled to Morocco on the jet skis after withdrawing all of the money they had earned from working while incarcerated.
The inmates left the Melilla prison on September 13 after being granted a 3-day permit but failed to return on time, leading officials to believe that this was a well-planned escape.
The union has requested the immediate dismissal of the prison director and the opening of an investigation to establish who is ultimately responsible for the jail break.
