ARCHIVED - Three thousand drivers in Valencia region fined for speeding in one week
In Alicante province, 795 drivers were denounced in a crackdown on driving offences across the Valencia region.
A total of 3,325 motorists were fined up to €600 each in the space of a week as part of a Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) speed control campaign.
The speed of 51,773 vehicles was monitored, with 6.4 per cent of them found to be exceeding the limits between May 10 and 16.
A breakdown of the provinces shows that in Alicante, 16,131 vehicles were checked and 795 fines for speeding were imposed, with 2,090 offenders sanctioned of the 26,393 motorists who passed through the radars in Valencia.
And in Castellon, 440 cars out of 9,249 were travelling faster than the speed limit in controls set up by regional and local police.
The Road Safety Law and the General Traffic Regulations establish restrictions to generic and specific speed limits, overtaking speed and distances maintained between vehicles.
Failure to comply with these rules is classified as a "serious or very serious infringement", and leads to fines of between €100 and €600.
Article 379 of the Penal Code also stipulates that "whoever drives a motor vehicle or moped at a speed in excess of 60 km per hour on urban roads or 80 km per hour on interurban roads will be punished with a prison sentence of three to six months or community service of 31 to 90 days".
Motorists can also be banned from driving vehicles and mopeds for a period of one to four years and lose between two and six points from their driving licence, depending on the seriousness of the offence.
The campaign was carried out in a week in which the new speed limit of 30km per hour in single lane roads came into force.
