Torrevieja unveils plans for new foodie market to rival Madrid and Seville
More than 2,000 m² of fresh produce, gourmet food and places to eat are coming to the heart of Torrevieja

Torrevieja will soon have a brand new gastronomic market and it's shaping up to be quite a destination. The city council has awarded the concession for the new La Plasa building to Origen Murcia, which will manage the space for the next ten years.
Spread across the ground floor and mezzanine of the building, the market will cover more than 2,000 m² and bring together a traditional fresh produce market alongside a full gourmet food market.
The idea is to create somewhere that works all day, not just in the mornings.
"We want it to stop being a space that closed at midday and become an active meeting point throughout the day, capable of generating economic activity, attracting visitors and revitalising the urban centre," Mayor Eduardo Dolón explained.
Alongside fresh, local and gourmet produce, the space will include areas for eating and drinking on site, with local entrepreneurs and self-employed traders also forming part of the mix. It's a model that's already proven successful in Madrid, Seville and Murcia.
The project involves close to €1 million in private investment and is expected to create around 230 jobs, directly and indirectly. Existing market vendors have been offered special deals to stay on in the new space.
Origen Murcia brings more than 20 years of experience in managing this kind of project, which the mayor says was a key factor in the decision. Construction is currently on schedule, with the market expected to open before the end of 2026 or in early 2027.
