ARCHIVED - WHO predicts an end to the Covid pandemic by spring
Coronavirus cases continue to decline across much of Spain
The World Health Organisation (WHO) believes that more than 60% of people will have been infected by the Omicron variant by March this year, signalling the beginning of the end of the sixth wave of the pandemic this spring.
Speaking to the media on Sunday January 23, the director of the WHO for Europe, Hans Kluge, nevertheless advised caution against declaring victory just yet, as new mutations can’t be ruled out; however, he said that “it is plausible that the region is approaching the end of the pandemic.”
The director’s comments come just days after he criticised Spain’s Pedro Sanchez for suggesting that world leaders should begin treating coronavirus like the common flu and relax monitoring measures. While the WHO said at the time that Covid is something we will have to learn to live with, the organisation stressed that it is still far too early to consider it to be an endemic disease.
In Spain, the number of new cases continues to decline in most of the communities although several have noted an increase in both the accumulated incidence rate and hospital ward admissions, which is still above 15%. Nevertheless, many regions have by now chosen to ease their safety restrictions, such as night-time curfews and the Covid passport for entry into bars and restaurants.
However, the weekend has passed with street protests against Covid limitations in Bilbao, Seville and Barcelona while the likes of the UK, Ireland and France have lifted several measures.
