ARCHIVED - Spain favourites to host 2031 Ryder Cup ahead of the UK
Irishman Denis O’Brien owns the golf course near Barcelona where the tournament looks likely to be held

Spain are now the hot favourites to host the Ryder Cup in 2031 at the Camiral Golf & Wellness venue (formerly known as the PGA Catalunya golf course), beating out impressive bids from the UK for the Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire, Bolton’s Huyton Park Championship and the London Club in Kent.
The deal is by no means done, and Spain was already pipped to the post for holding this year’s tournament in favour of the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome.
However, sports insiders claim that, while the 2035 Ryder Cup might be staged in the UK, the 2031 honour will most likely go to Irishman Denis O’Brien, who has pumped millions into the Girona course after buying it in 2007.
The Spanish venue, situated close to Barcelona, has already hosted the Spanish Open three times and has been voted the top golf resort in Spain.
After losing out on the last tournament bid, Mr O’Brien said: “From its inception, our Stadium Course was designed and built to host the world’s largest events – and hosting the Ryder Cup would be the realisation of this vision.”
According to a Cup source, the bidding process has been streamlined in recent years to ensure a fairer system for all competing nations:
“The Tour was finding that they would have four or five bids, with loads of money spent on each, and at the end there would only be one happy party, with the others suddenly against the Tour,” the insider said.
“This way, it’s much less messy. The Tour had intended to announce by the end of 2022 but because of everything that has happened, it is understandable that there’s been no rush.”
Spain has been making a name for itself in the sporting world in recent years and has put in a bid with Portugal and Ukraine to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
