ARCHIVED - Tarragona shooter receives life-ending euthanasia in prison
The Tarragona ex-security guard became quadriplegic following a gunshot wound and requested assisted suicide

Former security guard Eugen Sabau, more commonly known as the Tarragona gunman after shooting three colleagues and a Police officer, has died in the Terrassa prison hospital on Tuesday August 23 after being granted a euthanasia request by the courts.
The Romanian national barricaded himself in a remote farmhouse which had been stocked with an arsenal of weapons after going on a shooting spree in December last year; following a shoot-out, the suspect had a leg amputated and was left paralysed.
Before he could stand trial for attempted murder, Mr Sabau asked to be considered for assisted suicide, which is legal in Spain if the patient is suffering from chronic pain. Despite the protests of his victims, who asked that justice be served and a sentence handed down before he died, the gunman was granted his wish to end his life.
Lawyer for the injured officer, José Antonio Bitos, has strenuously argued against the decision to euthanise the shooter before he could stand trial, arguing that the decision sets jurisprudence for other serious crimes, such as terrorism or sexual assault on minors.
Mr Bitos has since requested a well-studied “reformulation” of the law when it comes to inmates facing considerable charges or lengthy prison sentences.
