ARCHIVED - Volcano deniers appear on social media questioning La Palma eruption
From government plots to space age satellites, the deniers have thought of every conceivable explanation for the volcanic eruption on the Canary Island of La Palma
It might seem incredible considering at least 100 homes were completely destroyed after the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Canary Island of La Palma erupted last Sunday September 19, but a new group of ‘volcano deniers’ have cropped up on social media pages, much to the chagrin of other users.
At the moment their numbers are limited, but their comments surrounding the recent natural disaster, which saw more than 5,000 people evacuated from their homes and countless fearing for the after-effects of noxious gases, have led to a substantial online backlash, mocking the ‘deniers’ who feel the volcanic eruption was part of a complex, orchestrated plan.
Bemused Twitter users have laughed at the claims that the 20 million cubic metres of lava were caused by “mirror satellites pointing at the crater” or, even more bizarrely, as a Spanish government ploy to make people forget about the extortionate rise in electricity prices.
One more farfetched commenter even suggested that, since the words volcano and vaccine both start with the letter ‘v’, there is clearly some greater conspiracy at hand!
